Temporal Integration at Extremely Low Contrast

Gabe Diaz’ thesis from 2004.

The goal of this research is to investigate the relationship between the abil- ity to recognize objects at very low contrasts and the duration for which they are presented. Empirical evidence suggests that duration plays a significant role in our ability to recognize objects in these impoverished conditions. To investigate this phenomenon, low contrast objects were presented to observers for extended durations of time and performance was assessed. The findings suggest that recognition complies with an extended duration power integra- tion model of recognition. More specifically, our research suggests that the mechanism is integrating features over time and using them to hypothesis test against the pool of possible stimuli in order to narrow the pool and increase guessing accuracy.
